Android App Review: Nordstrom

Nordstrom 1

The official Nordstrom app lets you browse the store's collections and purchase clothes right from your Android device. When the app opens, you'll see the main menu which can be filtered by Department or Brand. If you select the Department filter, you'll get a list of different shopping departments: Women, Men, Juniors, Designer Collections, Baby & Kids, Shoes, Handbags & Accessories, Jewelry & Watches, Beauty & Fragrance, At Home & Gifts, Sale and Weddings. Brands will bring up every different brand that is carried by Nordstrom, or too long to spew out here.

There is always a menu that you can access via the action bar or menu button. Options are Your Style, Shop, Wish List, Events and Bag. Your Style allows you to browse various styles handpicked by Nordtrom.  Shop brings you right back to the area of the app where you can shop, Wish List saves everything that you would like to place onto your wish list, Events displays upcoming things to do at your local store and Bag is simply your cart.

You can purchase items directly from the app and either have it shipped to you or schedule an in-store pick-up.

Overall, the official Nordstrom app is very nicely done. Fans of the department store will find it to be a good experience and I'm sure will find that they're shopping more because they can do it anywhere. If you like Nordstrom or just want to check out a good shopping app, please find links to the free app after the break.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

CrackBerry Kevin and the $500 clock app misadventure

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked
Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

letitslide
I have a thing for physics games, and I've been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I've posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you're running Preview 1, it looks like you'll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac's initial findings there's definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it's looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We're sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there's bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We'll update this post when we find out more.

Google releases Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office

Google Cloud Connect, Google's plugin that integrates Google Docs and Microsoft Office apps, launched last November for a limited number of users. Now, Cloud Connect is ready for prime time, and the plug-in is available to everyone.

Cloud Connect allows you to save your Office documents to the cloud, edit them in Google Docs, and sync the changes back to your desktop. It doesn't replace Office with Google Docs, but it lets people who aren't ready to make the switch to the cloud use both simultaneously. If you want, you can just use Google Docs for syncing, and do all your actual editing on your desktop in Word, PowerPoint or Excel.

Key features of Cloud Connect include simultaneous collaboration (with the ability to work offline and resolve conflicting changes once you reconnect), revision history, document sharing and, of course, cloud sync. Cloud Connect works with Office 2003, 2007 and 2010.

Sparrow Lite ad-supported email client lands in Mac App Store

sparrow lite now available in mac app storeSparrow, the slick-looking Mac email client that rocked the Mac App Store's sales charts earlier this month, isn't for everyone. But how do you know if it's for you without shelling out the $10 price of admission? That's where Sparrow Lite comes in.

Sparrow Lite is a free, ad-supported version of Sparrow that's designed to give you a feel for the app's unique approach to email. It's practically the same as the full version, but it does have its wings clipped a little bit: you can only use one email account at a time, and there's a mandatory "Sent with Sparrow" included in your signature.

So, if you're considering Sparrow as a Mac Mail replacement, but want to try it out before dolling out $10, check out Sparrow Lite in the Mac App Store.

O'Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.
